After spending the afternoon in El Yunque National Forest, we made our way to Puerto Nuevo. We had anticipated the journey taking only a couple of hours but made the mistake of heading west through the outskirts of San Juan around rush hour.

Day #5 started on the island of Vieques and ended in a friend’s townhouse in Vega Baja, northwest of San Juan. On our way back west on Highway 3 from Fajardo, we took the northern segment of Highway 191 to the North Slope of El Yunque National Forest.

After a leisurely Sunday stroll through Old San Juan, we took to the road, driving first to Luquillo Beach for lunch at the famed Luquillo food kiosks and a quick stroll along the white-sand beach, then down the eastern coast and up to the south side of the tropical rain forest of El Yunque.

Brilliant sunshine awoke us around 7:30am on a Sunday morning, beginning our first full day in Puerto Rico. Isla Verde and Coqui Inn were quiet and sleepy and Old Town beckoned. We packed up our things, checked out of Coqui, and took a nice leisurely drive deeper into the heart of the Puerto Rican capital.
